HEMOPURE SOUTH AFRICA NOW AN AFFILIATE OF OPK BIOTECH

OPK Biotech develops, manufactures and markets oxygen therapeutics, a new class of pharmaceuticals that are administered intravenously to increase oxygen transport to the body's tissues. Using our patented and proprietary technology, we have developed and manufacture two products: Hemopure® (HBOC-201) [hemoglobin glutamer - 250 (bovine)] for human use, and Oxyglobin® (HBOC-301) [hemoglobin glutamer - 200 (bovine)] for veterinary use.

Due to adverse publicity from a so-called meta-analysis published April 2008 in the Journal of the American Medical Association, the South African Department of Health Regulatory body, the Medicines Control Council (MCC) of South Africa, decided to discontinue the registration of Hemopure. Prior to that notice, the Company had done all required reporting on Hemopure’s usage since its approval for marketing. The Company is allowed to continue to sell the product pending the outcome of the appeal.
